This Da Capo Press editiob of The Sharples is an unabridges republication of the first edition published by Yale University Press, New Haven, Conneticut, in 1930. It is reprinted by special arrangement and permission from a copy of the original edition in the collection of the Alderman Library, University of Virgina. From the Jacket Flap; In Independence Hall, Philadelphia, ther hangs a group of pastel portraits of unusual interest, mainly the work of James Sharples and his gifted family. The potraits represent such men as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, DeWitt Clinton, and other 18th-Centry Americans of historical Importance. Across the Atlanic, in Bristol, England, is a similar collection. There, the portraits drawn by Sharples include not only eminent Americans, but Sir Humphrey Davy, Robert Southey, Dr. Erasmus Darwin Louis Philippi, and Tallyrand.
