Octavo, hardcover, beautifully bound in quarter black calf over marbled boards. 314 pages, beautifully printed in three colors throughout at the George Grady Press for the Limited Editions Club. Designed and decorated by W.A. Dwiggins. LIMITED TO 1500 COPIES SIGNED BY THE ARTIST. A very fine copy. The Centenary Edition of Meredith's first novel, written when he was a destitute young married man with one infant. Unfortunately the first edition was sold off as a remainder, and it was not reprinted until 10 years later. It is an oriental story of a shaving operation in which the young barber, Shibli Bagarag, seeks to perform, despite obstacles within obstacles, upon the head of the clothier Shagpat, who was "a miracle of hairiness, black with hair as he had been muzzled by it, and his head as it were a berry in a huge bush by reason of it.the beautiful sorceress Noorna bin Noorka is ready to wed Shibli Bagarag when his barbering deed is accomplished.".
