About this Item

First US edition, first printing (no additional printings noted). Both book and jacket have flaws, of varying degrees of seriousness, which I am going to describe as carefully as possible. (Note: photos on request!) The book, with clean cloth covers, tight binding and sharp corners (one mildly tapped) has a thin strip (about 1/2 cm.) of darkened cloth on the upper spine tip. Overall, I would grade the book as very good minus - however, it presents as near fine from the outside. Inside the book, there is some offsetting to the pastedowns and endpages (a few small stains on the front end page as well) and each pastedown has a gash in the paper about 2" long descending from the top edge (I have no explanation for this but the pastedown is not detached). On the verso the rear endpage is the small remnant of what looks like a bookplate (about 2 & 1/2" long by 1/2" deep). There is what looks like a small grease stain at the lower corner, affecting the fore-edges of pp. 307-314 (and a tiny bit on a few of the preceding pages. Otherwise the interior is clean and no text is affected - no marking, underlining, previous owner writing, etc. The original dustjacket by Alvin Lustig is first issue (priced at $2.75 on the lower front flap and I would grade it good plus to very good minus. The most serious flaw is that is has been trimmed about 1/2 cm. in height. It has a closed tear to the upper spine fold of about 1 & 3/4" and a much shorter one near the front fold. It is uncreased. The rear panel is slightly soiled, the spine is slightly darkened and the (clean and bright) front panel is still gorgeous. In spite of this tedious laundry list of defects, it is the real thing: the first printing of Paul Bowles' very scarce first novel. I have priced it taking into account the defects. Repeat: Photos on request!. Bookseller Inventory # 603
