About this Item

From Ken Lopez: "Bowles's landmark first novel, about three young Westerners encountering the alien culture of North Africa, to their ultimate misfortune. One of the seminal novels of tre Beat generation and an influential book in the decades since.Bowles wrote the book after moving to Tangier, where he spent most of his life. His book is fundamentally about the limits of not only one's knowledge but most especially the knowledge of one's own ignorance. Doubleday commissioned the book and paid Bowles an advance and then refused the manuscript when he submitted it. Later, John Lehrmann in the UK printed the novel in an editoin of only 4000 cvopies. It was later published in a small editrion by New Directions." This is a copy of the first 1st Am. ed., 318 pp, orig. beige cloth stamped in aqua and black. App one inch tape residue marks on upper and lower boards. First endpaper snipped at upper corner. No edition stated, which was the practice with New Directions first editions at the time. Both US and UK first editions were published in the same year, 1949. Binding is sturdy and tight, no internal marks, but light soiling on endpapers, with front one snipped at top. DJ designed by Alvin Lustig is whole except as noted, and the design is clear. DJ has small edge tear on lower front. The bottom of the DJ is app. 1/4" short, the result of a neat snip with a paper cutter. "Firsts," the book collector's magazine, suggests persuasively that the flyleaf "may have had an early dust jacket protector which had glue strips at the top and/or bottom edge that left an ugly brown residue. Someone removed the jacket from the sleeve and trimmed it on a paper cutter to remove the unsightly stain. It is possible that the price, $2.75, which is located at the bottom edge of the front flap, was trimmed off along with the glue residue." (Dec 2012, Vol 22, Number 10). The flyleaf is unclipped and there is no price indicated, suggesting that the snipping resulted from a price removal. This copy, with the Lustig DJ, is in a new facsimile of the original DJ of the UK first edition, designed by Fred Uhlman. Unchipped, unclipped and unmarked, with original price 10s.6d. net on lower front flyleaf. On grading: I have some VG books that are in better shape than this one. I also have seen many books graded "good" that are in decidedly worse shape than this one. Hence the "almost very good.". Bookseller Inventory # 120950
