About this Item

Brown cloth. Maugham's last play dealing with the theme of religious hypocrisy. In the last act, Maugham introduces Death who relates a vignette which has come to be known as "An Appointment in Samarra". John O'Hara used this as the title of his 1934 novel (and had to re-issue the book with credit to Maugham). The role of the barber, Sheppey, was played by Ralph Richardson when the play opened in London. A bright, square copy with brown topstain strong. No sunning or fading. Small blemish to front cover. Light spotting to front and lower page edges. Few pages lightly soiled. Lacking the dust jacket, but in a custom slipcase of marbled paper boards. VG+. (Stott A47). Bookseller Inventory # 335
