Synopsis: This is a true story of a family who learned how to care for a buffalo herd. The author, her husband and their children settled in Stanwood, a village tucked into the wild forests of central Michigan. It was not the life Mrs. Cummings had expected. When her husband announced he was goind to raise buffalo she didn't take him seriously, but the arrival of thirteen buffalo changed their lives. There are herds of facts and information about buffalo history.
From the Publisher: Shinglebolt is a tale about a boy named Corky who sets out to find his father's lumbering camp on the Muskegon River. Along the way he meets up with Cadje, a part Indian employee of Corky's father. A St. Bernard dog dives out of the woods to save Corky from being hit by a widowmaker, a falling branch. They name the dog "Shinglebolt."
Corky meets all sorts of interesting characters at his Pa's lumber camp, including a pair of murderers and log rustlers. Throughout the story runs the theme of "Don't be afraid of something or somebody just because they are different."
