About this Item

Lot (2) folio ledgers with marbled paper covered boards, worn leather corners and leather back strips. The first ledger records begin in July 1860 and has 138 pages. The second ledger entries start in late 1861 and has 142 pages. Both ledgers spines are taped and boards are worn with large sections of marbled paper missing. Some of the pages in the logs are loose and starting to detach. 10 pages in the first ledger have cut out sections ranging from half to a quarter page of missing content. The second ledger also has cut out sections with 8 pages of similar size content missing. Several pages are brown stained upper edges and other pages contain small ink stains and occasional dark smudges. The front and rear end sheets of both ledgers are damp stained. Written at the top sections of the logs are departure locations and arrival places. Each page consist of columns but no lines. Printed titled columns include "Hours, knots, Fath's, Courses, Winds, L. W., Variat'n and Remarks." Recorded measurements and written narratives are clearly legible. The master of the Schooner H. P. Russell in 1860 was L. Mankin. Mankin's entries make up all but the last 18 pages of the first ledger. Stephen. C Nickerson, Master recorded the last 18 pages in the first log from May 15, 1865 to October 7, 1865. L. Mankin was in charge of keeping records in the second ledger from December 24, 1861 to June 8th, 1862. The next log sheet was removed. Log entries begin again June 30th, 1862 in the hand of the next ship Master, P. Nickerson. The last dated record in the second log was June 21, 1863 while Nickerson and the H. P. Russell were anchored in New Orleans. According to the written records and narratives kept in the ship logs the Schooner Henry P. Russell (H. P. Russell), a northern merchant vessel, conducted trade along the Atlantic Coast and Gulf of Mexico just before, during and after the Civil War. While the H. P. Russell sailed on its voyages the Masters of the H. P. Russell recorded daily measurements, sailing routes, wind and weather conditions, ship maintenance, operation issues, etc. The commanders also recorded the passing of landmarks and light-houses, quantities of cargo picked up, the occasional exchange of colors with other ships, and the general health of crew. The H. P. Russell shipped cotton and rice from Charleston, South Carolina as late as January 1861. March 1861 records the departure and voyage of the H. P. Russell towards Charleston but there is no record in the remarks section of delivering or receiving any goods while in the Charleston Harbor. After departing Charleston in March 1861 the ship set sail for Rio De Janeiro. Other voyages recorded in the logs include round trips from New York to Havana, Trinidad, New Orleans and the Tortugas. These logs books do not directly mention the Civil War or any problems associated with the conduct of business due to the war. However, what these logs do provide is primary source material, sometimes repetitive, of a ship's travels conducting business "as usual" during the war, sometimes not too far removed the action.
