Title: Ship of Theseus
Publisher: Mulholland Books.
Publication Date: 2013
Book Condition: New
Edition: First Edition.
Book Description Mulholland Books / Little Brown & Co., New York, 2013. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Book presents the appearance of a heavily marked-up, ex-high-school library copy of a 1949 (first edition) novel by the mysterious V.M. Straka ("Winged Shoes Press," New York), full of hand-written notes and annotations and laid-in ephemera (postcards, photocopies, "old photographs," etc.) in which two college students -- one male and one female -- communicate as they search for clues about the nature of the book and its elusive author. (Actual colophon appears in fine print to rear pastedown, below faked library "date due" slip. Number line there is 10 9 8 7 6 5 4, only, though whether that means this is actually a fourth printing, or represents more foolishness, we have no idea.) We believe all the inserts are present and in place (we certainly have not removed any), though we have not done a collation. 456 pp. Bookseller Inventory # 005412
Book Description Mulholland Books, 2013. Hardcover. Book Condition: Collectible; Like New. No Jacket. First Edition. First edition. A near fine copy in a very good publisher's slipcase. Bottom edge of front board bumped. Slipcase edges lightly bumped. One out of twenty-two inserts laid in (missing twenty-one inserts). xiv, 456 pp. One out of twenty-two inserts laid in (missing twenty-one inserts). "S. is presented in the form of a novel called Ship of Theseus written by an elusive author named V. M. Straka and published in 1949. Beyond the black slipcover with the S. title, no reference is made to Dorst or Abrams, and the only reference to the book's true publishing information appears in fine print inside the back cover. The publication information is printed under a mock-up of a high school library's check-out history of the book, spanning the years 1957 to 2000.Removed from the slipcover, S. is designed to appear entirely as a copy of the standalone novel Ship of Theseus written by Straka that was borrowed from and never returned to the Laguna Verde High School Library. The pages are worn and yellowed with library stamps in the front and back cover and stains on the pages.""A young woman picks up a book left behind by a stranger. Inside it are his margin notes, which reveal a reader entranced by the story and by its mysterious author. She responds with notes of her own, leaving the book for the stranger, and so begins an unlikely conversation that plunges them both into the unknown. The book: Ship of Theseus, the final novel by a prolific but enigmatic writer named V.M. Straka, in which a man with no past is shanghaied onto a strange ship with a monstrous crew and launched onto a disorienting and perilous journey. The writer: Straka, the incendiary and secretive subject of one of the world's greatest mysteries, a revolutionary about whom the world knows nothing apart from the words he wrote and the rumors that swirl around him. The readers: Jennifer and Eric, a college senior and a disgraced grad student, both facing crucial decisions about who they are, who they might become, and how much they're willing to trust another person with their passions, hurts, and fears."--Slipcase.S., conceived by filmmaker J.J. Abrams and written by award-winning novelist Doug Dorst, is the chronicle of two readers finding each other in the margins of a book and enmeshing themselves in a deadly struggle between forces they don't understand. It is also Abrams and Dorst's love letter to the written word."Keywords: STRAKA SHIP THESEUS S J J JJ ABRAMS DOUG DORST FICTION. Bookseller Inventory # 2204639

Book Description Winged Shoe Press, New York, 2013. Clean, tight 8vo, 456pp. In a slipcase. The seal on the slipcase is broken to remove the book. There is a small separation on the slipcase on the bottom edge but not serious. Book itself is near fine with all ephemera laid in as nearly as I can assess. This book is way too much fun and hard to describe. It is filled with faux foxed pages and yellowing paper, letters, cards, library stamps, notations by two people who pass the book (which is about a man who is shanghaied onto a ship) back and forth making comments about it and about their own lives and loves, and perhaps, eventually meeting.
