About this title

In "Shipwreck Tales of the Great Lakes," Cris Kohl has captured the essense of the Great Lakes -- tales of the glamorous ships as well as the common workhorses, of courageous, honorable sailors as well as deceitful, murderous ones. Here are exciting, true stories of Great Lakes men and ships -- some died quietly, some died violently, some died tragically, and some of these sunken ships have been reborn as ice water museums while their captains and crews have sailed into legend. In this collection of some of the more unusual tales of the inland seas, you will enjoy reading about the many quests to find the fabled "Griffon," the first shipwreck on the upper Great Lakes, lost on her maiden voyage in the year 1679; the sheriff's secret about the wrecked schooner, "Explorer," and the horrid discovery made by salvagers years later when they raised that shipwreck; the schooner captain who survived his vessel's tragic sinking and how he kept his survival a secret for many years; the very popular passenger excursion steamer, "Tashmoo," the "Queen of the Detroit River," and how she sailed into history; the 'hard luck' whaleback ship named the "Henry Cort," which sank four times; the shipwreck which helped build Chicago; the 120-year-old sailing vessel which was raised from the bottom of Lake Michigan, amazingly intact, in 1969, and that ship's ironic fate; horror stories from from Australia, and how it became a shipwreck in the Great Lakes. Plus more! "Shipwreck Tales of the Great Lakes" is a 286-page, 6-inch by 9-inch softcover book, with 120 color photographs, 130 black-and-white photographs, 30 line drawings, 5 maps, bibliography and index.
