About this Item

Maritime historian Gavin McLean and artist Eric Heath combined to produce this "album" of paintings and text covering a selection of notable shipwrecks in NZ waters, from HMS Orpheus in 1863 (still the loss which claimed the highest death toll of 189) to the Soviet cruiseliner Mikhail Lermontov of 1986 (at over 20,000 grt the largest ship wrecked off the NZ coast, but with only one life lost.) Two other losses, in 1986 and 1991 conclude the record. Ships lost;range from wartime sinkings, to schooners and scows, one full-rigged ship, coastal and trans-Tasman liners, colliers, a police launch, coasters and large freighters and refrigerated ships. Highlighting this book are Eric Heath's magnificent ship profile paintings, the majority extending double page and illustrating each of the 31 wrecks covered. (Well over 2000 shipwrecks have been recorded in NZ waters.) First edition of 1994, 80 pages, colour art throughout, maps. further reading list. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+ with trace wear spine base, internally NF, no inscriptions. Colour art DJ with four ship profiles is VG+ with two short tears (lower right front edge and upper right top rear.). Bookseller Inventory # 004008
