RARE 19th-century volume featuring two titles, being the commentary of the Meir Leibush Weiser ("Malbim") on the Song of Songs and the book of Ruth. Malbim, who was the chief Rabbi of Romania, was known for his strict adherence to orthodoxy and for his elegant and novel reading of the scriptures, focusing on their spiritual-allegorical side. This book feature his commentary, along with the more traditional commentaries of Rashi, Metzudat David and Metzudat Tzion. 225X150mm. 38+13 double pages. Green quarter-leather hardcover. Cover worn and slightly bumped. Cover corners bumped. Numerous worm holes on back cover, few of which extend into the last 20 pages of the book, with no damage to the text. Spine worn. Spine edges peeling. Pen inscription on endpaper. Title page detached. Pages yellowing. Despite the aforementioned external damage, this rare old Hebrew book is in good condition for reading.
