1938, Modern Library Edition. Green cloth boards with the Modern Library torch man encircled on the front board.The First Forty-Nine Stories and the play The Fifth Column. Binding in poor condition yet taped together. Front endpapers are browned with prior owners name written in pen. 597 pages in good condition, albeit yellowed due to age, with some pencilled underlining by prior owner. No dust jacket. The Preface, written by Ernest Hemingway is the first version, referring to The Fifth Column, which was later dropped from later editions of the stories.
