Description:

These 2 bibles contain genealogical entries related to the descendants of Seth Shurtleff (born March 6, 1803) and his wife, Mercy (Gibbs) Shurtleff (born Sept. 17, 1807) of Carver, Mass. and surrounding towns. Included in one bible are 8 inserted pages (4 leaves) showing the descent from William Shurtleff who arrived at Plymouth, Mass. around 1630 when a boy. He married Elizabeth Lettice on Oct. 18, 1655 and had 3 sons, William, Thomas, and Abiel. Other pages show the descent from Deacon Nathaniel Atwood of Plymouth, who moved to Carver, Mass. and died on Dec. 17, 1724. A number of his descendants are shown as having married Shurtleffs. One page is devoted to Micah Gibbs (born Sept. 17, 1777) of Wareham, Mass., and his descendants, one of whose sons married a Shurtleff. Some members of a later generation of Shurtleffs were given middle names of Atwood and of Gibbs. The 1835 Shurtleff bible is a large quarto, in full, worn and chipped brown calf, lacking the frontpapers, and the title page, with the first 2 leaves detached. The pages are foxed with some brown stains. There are 4 pages of a "Family Record" plus 4 leaves (8 pages) of additional genealogy. There are 4 marriages recorded: Seth Shurtleff to Mercy Gibbs in 1826; Frank Hamilton Shurtleff to Margaret Ann Fowler? in 1892 in Dorchester, Mass.; Dorothy Margaret Shurtleff to Earle Hurd Davis in 1934; and Hester Alden Shurtleff to Albert William Evans in 1945 in West Roxbury, Mass. The latest deaths recorded are: Margaret A. Shurtleff (widow of Frank Hamilton Shurtleff) in 1961, aged 87; and Franklin Atwood Shurtleff (son of Margaret Shurtleff) in 1975, aged 68. A related family name is Southworth. Found together with this bible is of a related Atwood line: "Hitchcock's New and Complete Analysis of The Holy Bible", New York, 1870, with the worn spine half detched. The frontpaper is inscribed: "Presented to Mrs. Charles C. Atwood by her husband, Jan, 1. 1870". This book contains 6 pages of a Family Record, 5 of which pages have entries. The entries start with the July 26, 1863 marriage of Charles G. Atwood (born in 1840) to Margaret A. Crowley (born in 1844). Recorded are their 2 children, Charles S. and Harold M., born in 1864 and 1873. The next generation recorded are Robert H. Bowman and Helen E., followed by 6 additional names - Robert G. Pasca, Nadine A. Bowman, Howard G. Bowman, Robert H. Bowman, Eileen M. Bowman, and James A. Bowman, who were born between 1938 and 1945 in Boston. The 2 books are being sold as one lot.
