Orange illustrated wraps; pp. , illustrated throughout. Why was this book published, in Russian, as the Russians and Germans fought bitterly toward the end of WWII? While Germany's great humorist of the 19th century might be expected to amuse anyone (his drawings of chickens are delightful), the people least likely to be wanting to be amused by German humorists might be presupposed to be the Russians in 1944. And 1944 seems too early for the United Nations Relief and Reconstruction Agency (UNRRA) to have delivered books to the DP camps for Russians isolated in Germany, though two years later teams from the UNRRA would do so. We have seen a Pushkin and a children's book made for Russian DPs in Germany -- they were made later than 1944. Herrose does not appear to have survived the war. The last book with this imprint? Curiouser and curiouser. Bookseller Inventory # R5177
