About this Item

John Cassell, publisher; From The Illustrated Book of the Dog; London: Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co., 1881; Lithograph, sheet size: 8" x 10 1/2" John Cassell, a temperance activist, began his publishing business with the sole purpose of providing the middle class with good literature. His firm, which became Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. in 1859, produced several standard works including Popular Educator (1852-1855), the Technical Educator (1870-1872), and the Magazine of Art (1878-1903). By far, the most notable feature of Cassellís publications was the illustration. The Illustrated Book of the Dog, published by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. out of London in 1881, was written by Vero Shaw and illustrated with over 93 colored plates and black and white engravings that depicted the pure breeds of the day. Vincent, Brookes, Day and Son created these high quality chromolithographs. The Illustrated Book of the Dog was the fourth illustrated book on dogs to be printed in English and contained the very first colored portraits of the Irish Water Spaniel and the Retrievers, both of which are part of this set. Each of the portraits is titled with the breed, the owner, and also indicates the dogís name. Bookseller Inventory # aE0904c
