Versatile, prolific character actor whose unusual high-pitched voice (the result of exposure to poison gas during World War One) distinguished him in more than 100 films; thrice he made a habit of picking up Best Supporting Actor Oscars every other year (for "Come and Get It" in 1936, "Kentucky" in 1938 and "The Westerner" in 1940), the first ever to earn three Academy Awards; on television, he's mainly remembered for "The Real McCoys" (1957-63). Large and bold "To Donald Burnell / Best Wishes always / Walter Brennan / 'Grampa McCoy' / 8/2/61" in blue ballpoint, slightly irregular-shape 4¼" X 2 3/4" slip, n.p. Very good. Three small scotch tape stains along lower edge, slightly touching the bottom edge of the "W" in "Walter" and the two slash marks on the date portion. Accompanied by a nifty glossy 9" X 7½" publicity portrait for the 1972 made-for-television "Home for the Holidays," an informal closeup of the elderly Brennan. Despite condition, this is a bold and fairly attractive signature (the desireable double signature featuring "Grampa McCoy") and a most unusual image. Bookseller Inventory # 22813
