The Italian ambassador to the United States during the tumultuous 1930s tried to warn Rome against Hitler; he also served as ambassador to the U.S.S.R. and authored books on diplomatic matters; his American-born wife was a noted art collector. Bold "A. Rosso / Italian Ambassador" on a 4" X 4" slip, Washington, DC, 1934 February 8. Fine. Typed above the signature is "autograph signature of / His Excellency Augusto Rosso, / Italian Ambassador," while the place and date is typed below the signature.
