About this Item

This North Carolina jurist took part in the only coup d'etat in U.S. history -- the Wilmington Race Riot of 1898 (also known as the Wilmington Insurrection), in which a group of white supremacists forcibly took over the municipal government on November 10, 1898; this racist background was conveniently forgotten when, as North Carolina's 50th governor from 1901 to 1905, Aycock was such a strong education advocate he became known as the "Education Governor" and the father of public education. Boldly penned "Very truly yours / Charles B. Aycock / Gov. of N.C. / Feb. 15, 1903" on a heavy stock 4" X 3" card, n.p. Very good. Paper clip rust stain at upper left, faintly touching upon the "Ve" in "Very"; mounting traces on verso. Overall a quite attractive example, signed in office, accompanied by a nice 5½" X 8" turn-of-the-century glossy magazine portrait of Aycock. Bookseller Inventory # 31660
