This popular Kentucky representative (1877-89) achieved great success as the powerful 35th Speaker of the House (1883-89) and then as senator (1890-93), but as Cleveland's Secretary of the Treasury (1893-97) the Panic of '93 and other economic measures he undertook destroyed his standing -- he once had to abandon a stage mid-speech to dodge a barrage of rotten eggs. Choice, bold signature plus "Ky. / Septr 2, 1889" in black ink on a heavy stock bevel-edged 4" X 2" card. Near fine, with original "Speaker's Rooms" envelope also present. Comes with a modern reproduction of a contemporary steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait of Carlisle. An outstanding example. Bookseller Inventory # 38615
