Nicknamed "Father of the United Nations" by Franklin Roosevelt for his pivotal role in establishing this institution (which earned him the 1945 Nobel Peace Prize), the president appointed this Tennessee politico his Secretary of State in 1933, and he holds the distinction of holding this office longer than anyone -- 11 years, until 1944; he served his home state as a state legislator, then representative (1923-31) and senator (1931-33). A bold and nice signature in blue ink on a 3 5/8" X 2¼" card with "Autograph" printed at upper left, n.p., n.y. Fine. Accompanied by a superb glossy 8" X 6" black and white news agency photograph (International News Photos) depicting a smiling FDR and sober Hull seated side by side in the rear seat of a vehicle. Original mimeographed paper label neatly affixed to verso dates this 17 August 1941 and titles the scene "Roosevelt Returns to Washington," describing it thusly: "President Roosevelt returned home today after his momentous sea conferences with British Prime Minister Churchill. He was met at the station by Secretary of State Cordell Hull, who carried a batch of important papers for the President. Photo shows President Roosevelt and Secretary Hull seated in auto as they left the union station for the White House." A handsome pair. Bookseller Inventory # 40820
