Description:

The much-loathed and much-beloved American labor leader served as president of the United Mine Workers from 1920 to 1960 and helped create the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) which in turn established the United Steel Workers of America and other unions. Full signature in black ink as big and bold as Lewis's eyebrows on a heavy stock 5" X 3" card bearing typed inscription at top: "Autographed for Mr. Arnold F. Gates by John L. Lewis on November 30, 1936." Near fine. Gates (1914-93) went on to become a noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Accompanied by a superb glossy 9" X 7" black and white news agency photograph (International News Photos). Near fine. Original mimeographed paper label neatly affixed to verso, dated 24 February 1953, captions this scene "New Labor Advisory Committee Meets." It shows six persons seated around a huge Department of Labor conference table with ten persons standing behind them.
