About this Item

The U.S. Navy's all-time leading ace, downing 34 Japanese aircraft during World War Two, and the third-highest scoring American ace of the war -- and the only highest-scoring ace to survive the war; among his many honors was the Medal of Honor. Signed Commemorative Envelope, 7½" X 4½", n.p., cancelled 15 August 1985. Fine. 12p "Airspeed A.S. 57 Ambassador 2" stamp at upper right. Large pictorial color cachet filling left half of envelope, titled "40th Anniversary of V-J Day / 15th August 1985," depicts a half dozen military aircraft in flight over the ocean and explanatory text about commemorative flight from London to Hong Kong. In a blank area near bottom at center, McCampbell signs large and bold in black fineline. At lower left, the first officer of this commemorative 40th anniversary flight (Kerrill Chambers) also signs in blue ballpoint. Special circular postal cancellation. Accompanied by a small modern printed 5½" X 3½" black and white photograph showing McCampbell squatting atop the wing of his fighter plane (34 Japanese kill decals alongside the cockpit) addressing a group of officers on the ground.
