About this Item

Legal sized, one page contract between Negro League pitching star Terris McDuffie and the Marianao Club of the Cuban League (Liga de Base Ball Professional Cubana) for the winter season of 1952-53. The name of the club, the player ("Terry Mc. Duffy"), salary of 1000 pesos, and date are typed in. Signed in full "Terris McDuffie" and countersigned by league and club officials. Small mark from a paper clip top edge, a couple light foxed spots and some loss to the lower right corner not extending to any text or signature. Terris McDuffie (d. 1968) was known for his immense stamina as a pitcher in the old Negro Leagues, and called himself "Terris The Great". In 1927, while playing for the Newark Eagles, McDuffie started 27 games and finished them all. In 1941 he posted a 27-5 record with the pennant winning Homestead Grays. In three match-ups against the immortal Satchel Paige, Mc Duffie won two. He kept returning to the Newark Eagles due, according to some, to his close (very close) relationship with Eagles owner Effa Manley (who would herself become the first woman elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006). His is considered one of the most difficult Negro League autographs to obtain as he was a functional illiterate for most of his life. This item is accompanied by a PSA/DNA Letter of Authenticity.
