About this Item

This important American graphic designer served as art director for "Mademoiselle" magazine (1945-60); he served on the faculty at Yale University for many years, designed "Monalphabet" and other simplified alphabets," and influenced a whole generation of art directors. Signed First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled in Franklin, Massachusetts on September 12, 1980 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Single 15-cent "Learning never ends" stamp (designed by Thompson) at upper right. Fine. Typed along the lower margin is: "Bradbury Thompson, the veteran stamp designer from Riverside, / Connecticut, who executed the American Education stamp design, / taught with Josef Albers at Yale, and also worked with Albers / on a design project in the 1970's." (Interestingly, the typed text states he worked "under" Albers -- Thompson crossed this word out, replacing it with "with"!) Above this typed statement, just below the cancellation, Thompson signs boldly in black ballpoint. With original transmittal envelope, addressed to recipient in Thompson's hand and also signed by Thompson at upper left. A great pair -- an uncommon autograph. Bookseller Inventory # 25432
