About this Item

This American artist designed the USPS's first postage honoring baseball in 1939, as well as the 1940 3-cent "Three Graces" and the 1945 3-cent "US Army" stamp -- designing a total of more than 60 stamps and also World War Two occupation currency for Germany, Italy and Japan; as a commercial artist he is credited with many Phillips cigarette posters and the famous Victor Talking Machine Company's "His Master's Voice" advertisements. Signed First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled in Saint Joseph, Missouri on 3 April 1940 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Four connected 3-cent Roach-designed "Pony Express 80th Anniversary" stamps at upper right, and decorative cachet (based on stamp art) at left. Small typed recipient's name/address at center bottom. Near fine. Just below the stamp, Roch signs handsomely in full in black fountain pen, adding "Design" after. Accompanied by a 2" X 3" black-and-white photograph of Roach in old age and a 2pp ALS from ALEX UJVAROSY JR. (1906-89), dated 1970 January 26. Ujvarosy was a friend of Roach and published an article or two about him, and this good content letter written shortly after the artist's death discusses his signing practices.
