Description:

8½" X 11" sheet signed boldly in ink by these three notable historians of the War Between the States along with 17 other notable Lincoln scholars and historians, n.p., various dates between 1956 and 1963. Very good. Faint age toning. Extraordinary assemblage gathered on a blank white sheet with a thin margin rule and bearing a small but lovely original pen and ink color head-and-shoulders sketch of Abraham Lincoln at upper right with an American flag and shield behind him and the year "1863" encircled in a laurel wreath below him -- a charming drawing only about 1½" in height made by Arnold F. Gates (1914-93), the noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar who gathered these signatures between 1956 and 1963 for his son Robert. Gates got the ball rolling by asking Allan Nevins and renowned photography historian Frederick Hill Meserve (1865-1962) to inscribe this sheet for his son, which Nevins did large and bold near the center in blue ballpoint (dating it 13 February 1956) and Meserve just above him in black ink (similarly dated). The upper part has been boldly signed by Ralph G. Newman (1912-98), Lincoln/Civil War scholar and founder of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop; Lloyd A. Dunlap (1906-90), historian and co-editor of "The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln"; Paul H. Gantt (1907-79), assistant prosecutor at the Nuremberg war crimes trials and president of the Lincoln Group of Washington, D.C.; and one illegible unknown. Below Nevins' signature are the following, in order: Lloyd Ostendorf (1921-2000), Lincoln artist extraordinaire (dated 11 February 1964); Charles Hamilton (1914-96), influential autograph dealer and with Ostendorf author of the 1963 study "Lincoln in Photographs: An Album of Every Known Pose"; Louis A. Warren (1885-1983), long-time director of the Lincoln National Life Foundation Library and Museum, later renamed in his honor; Carl Sandburg, famed poet and Lincoln biographer; Carl Haverlin (1899-1985), radio pioneer and president of music licensing giant Broadcast Music, Inc. and noted Lincoln/Civil War collector and researcher (who adds "a friend of C.S. & of A.G. -- Nov. 1956"); Benjamin Barondess (1891-1960), noted Lincoln scholar and New York attorney; David C. Mearns (1899-1981), author of "Largely Lincoln," editor of "The Lincoln Papers" and long-time manuscript division chief at the Library of Congress; Philip Van Doren Stern (1900-84), author, editor, Lincoln and Civil War historian who penned the short story "The Greatest Gift" upon which the film "It's a Wonderful Life" is based; E.B. "Pete" Long (1920-81), prolific Lincoln and Civil War editor and scholar (dated November 1956); Charles O'Neill (1910-97), author of such Civil War titles as "Wild Train: The Story of the Andrews Raiders" (dated 13 February 1957); John J. Duff (?-1961) attorney and author of "A. Lincoln, Prairie Lawyer" (dated 9 April 1957); Bruce Catton, Pulitzer Prize-winning Civil War historian (dated 14 May 1957); Ray Middleton (1907-84), actor who portrayed Lincoln, appeared in many films such as "Winged Victory" and in 1940 became the first actor to portray Superman at the New York World's Fair (dated 10 March 1959); and Reinhard H. Luthin (1905-62), historian who authored "The Real Abraham Lincoln," "The First Lincoln Campaign" and other Lincoln studies. All signatures are boldly penned in blue or black ink, which together with Arnold Gates’ finely drafted and colored Lincoln portrait at upper right makes for a terrific presentation. A remarkable grouping of many of the 20th century's greatest Lincoln scholars that would be impossible to replicate. Bookseller Inventory #
