About this Item

6.5 x 4.25 inches, from the studio of Charles Roscoe Savage, 12 & 14 Main Street, Salt Lake City imprint, no date, circa 1888, depicting the Surgeon General in a waist-up pose attired in a suit and sporting a semi handle-bar mustache. Boldly signed on the back: "Samuel H. Pinkerton -- Salt Lake City -- Utah." Charles Roscoe Savage (1832 - 1909) was a landscape and portrait photographer best known for his detailed images of the West. He is best known for his 1869 photographs of the linking of the first continental railroad. Most of Savage's archived photographs were lost in 1883 in a disastrous studio fire. A significant collection of his works is currently housed in the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University. Some rounding at the corners; very good(-) condition. American physician best known for his role as the Surgeon General of Utah and later Chief Surgeon of the Oregon Short Line Railroad during the 1890's. Bookseller Inventory # 267936
