German cement pioneer Wilhelm Gustav Dyckerhoff (1805-1894) founded the company in 1865 under the name Lang & Co. Dyckerhoff's son Eugen and his father-in-law Gottlieb Widmann changed the name of the company to Dyckerhoff & Widmann. It became one of the leading companies for concrete construction in Germany. Eugen Dyckerhoff developed the compressed concrete (Stampfbeton) and at the end of the 1920s the company developed the Zeiss-Dywidag-System, a concrete shell construction system. It was awarded the Edward Longstreth Medal of Merit by the Franklin Institute for this invention in 1938. The company changed locations and affiliations a number of times and after declaring insolvency in 2005 the biggest part of the business was taken over by the Austrian building company STRABAB.
