First Edition. Bartlett (1804–55), a Quaker physician who was graduated from the Brown University Medical School in 1826, 2 years before its closing, was later mayor of Lowell, where Dickens, famously, visited in 1842. Bartlett was a great teacher at many medical schools, including Transylvania University in Kentucky, the first medical school west of the Alleghanies. Among many other works, Bartlett wrote an important early history of fevers in the United States. In applying deductive reasoning to medical problems, he was much admired by Osler. This work itself, generally in iambic hexameter, alludes to "Nicholas Nickleby," "Bleak House," and "Pickwick" to "Hard Times." Minimal wear on covers.
