About this title

Synopsis:

Of Simultaneous Orgasms and Other Popular Myths: A Realistic Look at Relationships is best summed up by James Andrew Cox of Midwest Book Review as the book that "probes the multi-faceted and complicated aspects of relationships between today's men and women against the backdrop of a true tale of love and loss. Shah tells the story of a couple who met, fell in love, parented a child, and for thirteen years lived a family life with a cozy "white picket fence" house that would have inspired Norman Rockwell. Then it falls apart when Shah's wife told him that she was no longer happy in the relationship they shared and that she had decided to leave with their daughter. This ruthlessly honest and intimate tale provides profoundly important insights in what enables relationships to survive (or fail to survive) in the modern world of stress, distraction and seduction. Shah has brilliantly and harmoniously blended together western pragmatism and eastern resignation, the culture of contemporary America with age-old wisdom of India. Of Simultaneous Orgasms and Other Popular Myths is highly recommended."

Or as the way the author sees it: "My book does not pretend to give an expert advise on relationships, for which I have no formal qualifications. Even though it is autobiographical in format, it is not an autobiography. It brings forth vital aspects of relationships in the backdrop of one continuous personal story, sparkled with stories of dozens of couples around the world. Their examples and how they handled ever so complicated aspects of their own relationships puts the eternal conflict between the sexes in a global perspective. And yet, the book is pertinent to anyone who has ever gone through the break up of a major relationship." What I have often heard my friends and readers say is: "What differentiates Of Simultaneous Orgasms and other Popular Myths, is its emotional power which draws the readers in and relaxes them so that they too can face some intimate and sometimes unpleasant truths about relationships, using the author’s experiences to guide them."

Anita Manuel of NAPRA Review describes it as: "A delightfully relaxed look at the trials of modern love relationship by a former editorial director of Playboy magazine - a wise pondering of the difficulties of being a couple, not only for contemporary Americans but from a three continent perspective. THIS IS AN HONEST LOOK AT LOVE FROM A SELF-PROCLAIMED NON-EXPERT."

In Contrast, Pamela A. .Matthews of University of Maryland Library says in her Library Journal review: "Shah whose main claims to authority seems to be that he worked for Playboy and has had many failed relationships, has put together a self-indulgent book.....In the course of his expose, he spouts unproven theories about women and relationships that are regressive enough to make even Phyllis Schlafly blush....Shah's book is not recommended."

The author of Defending Our Lives, Susan Murphy-Milano said in her radio interview: "I was shocked that I liked it, because I didn't want to read it at first, and once I began, I really was impressed with the way he captured the relationship, the real indepthness of the problems.... and the difficulty men face in not understanding the emotions of women. I thought it was very well written, ONE OF THE BEST ACTUALLY I HAVE READ IN A LONG TIME."

According to Gabriel Snyder of Bookman News: "An INTELLECTUALLY DISCIPLINED APPROACH TO EXTRAORDINARY EMOTIONAL AND RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS..... Shah's answer is fundamental and clear: PARTNERS HAVE EXPECTATIONS OF THE OTHER WHICH ARE FREQUENTLY UNREALISTIC. All of us have hopes, dreams and aspirations and Shah's stories and examples to live by are inspiring in their ability to further those hopes and dreams. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT BOOK."

Above all, Of Simultaneous Orgasms and other Popular Myths is a book about LOVE. Its a relationship book so PERSONAL and yet so UNIVERSAL.

From Library Journal:

Shah, whose main claims to authority seem to be that he worked for Playboy and has had many failed relationships, has put together a self-indulgent book. He outlines the build-up and fall-down of his 13-year relationship with "Carmen." In the course of this expose, he spouts unproven theories about women and relationships that are regressive enough to make even Phyllis Schlafly blush. As if the content weren't bad enough, the writing style seems to be more Penthouse than Playboy: "The three days that followed saw us making love in every corner of my apartment, even at the top of the San Ynez mountains." It seems that Shah and "Carmen" could have benefited from reading Bushong's book. Bushong, a psychotherapist with years of media experience, has put together a no-frills guide to keeping relationships honest. She could well be called the great enumerator; in addition to the seven dumb mistakes, she includes the "16 essential elements of a healthy relationship," "four steps to healthy communication," "five great intimacy builders," and so on. There's not a lot surprising or controversial in this book, but it is clearly written, and most of the advice rings true. Most public libraries could benefit from acquiring Bushong's book, but Shah's book is not recommended.?Pamela A. Matthews, Univ. of Maryland Lib., Baltimore
