About this Item

Single page holograph transcription of a paragraph from the chariot race in "Ben Hur" consisting of 24 lines in the author's hand and signed at the bottom "Lew Wallace". The quotation is from Chapter 58 and is the second full paragraph from the end of that chapter, beginning "The people arose, and leaped upon the benches." and concluding "Ben Hur turned the first goal. And the race was Won!." (this final sentence is underlined). Lew Wallace (1827-1905) was born in Indiana and begans his military career in the Mexican War. During the Civil War, he served with the Indiana Volunteers, rising to the rank of Brigadier General in September, 1861. After the War he sat on the court martial which tried the Lincoln conspirators and presided over the court martial which resulted in the execution of Andersonville Prison commandant Henry Wirz. In later years he became Governor of the New Mexico Territory. Wallace is best remembered for his novel "Ben Hur: A Tale of The Christ", one of the most popular American novels of the 19th century and basis for two classic films. The mss. sheet has some light folds and a small light stain near the middle of the paragraph. There are some pencil notations in the wide margins identifying the piece and the author.Manuscript.
