About this title

Few artists have ever achieved such an immediate impact as did Caravaggio, and the manner in which he adopted his dramatic and theatrical style, first to secular and then to Christian subjects, represents an extraordinary chapter in the history of art. Seemingly overnight, scores of painters from all over Europe were drawn to the works Caravaggio executed in Rome between about 1594 and 1606. A disproportionately large contingent of these artists came from the Low Countries, where a sympathy for aspects of Caravaggio's realistic manner fed an already well-established rustic tradition in the visual arts. Consequently, man of the painters represented in this exhibition went to Rome during the early years of the seventeenth century to assimilate his revolutionary manner and combine it with lessons learned in Utrecht, Antwerp, or elsewhere in the North.
