About this title

These volumes offer coverage on all aspects of the three major events of the 60s: the social revolution; the Vietnam war and the Civil Rights Movement. They also survey developments in the arts, science, technology, business and the economy, government and politics, sports and gender issues.

From Booklist:

Here is a set covering, in 554 articles, the sweep of issues, events, culture, and individuals of a momentous decade. From shorter, focused entries to 3,000-word essays on topics such as the cold war, the arrangement, treatment, and scope of this set make it accessible for an audience of high-school level and up.

There are recent single volumes on various aspects of this time period. The ABC-CLIO Companion to the 1960s Counterculture in America [RBB Mr 15 98] and Encyclopedia of American Activism: 1960 to the Present [RBB Mr 1 99] focus on certain aspects of the 1960s and do them justice. Topics such as the Black Panthers, hippies, and Allen Ginsberg can be found in all three titles; and the depth of treatment varies between each one. The Sixties in America covers more facets and people, as well as providing insight into some of the decade's more commonplace and less sensational aspects (branch banks, photocopying, surfing, Weight Watchers). Examples of other entries include Ali, Muhammad; Civil Rights Act of 1963; Dr. Strangelove; McLuhan, Marshall; miniskirts; Route 66; and Woodstock Festival. There are also entries on broader subjects, such as media, science and technology, and sports. More than 360 contributors help make the range of topics unique and broad based.

Each entry begins with a summary sentence or two. Headnotes provide such information as birth and death dates (for individuals) and author or director and publication or release dates (for books, films, etc.). Most articles have at least one paragraph emphasizing the impact that the individual, event, or activity had on the U.S.; many also include a paragraph on post-1960s developments. There are brief descriptions of key sources and texts that the researcher might consult for additional information on each topic and extensive see also references. Appended features such as listings of major films and plays, legislation, best-selling books and recordings, and popular musicians; time lines; and statistics add value, as do the photographs placed throughout the text. A "Bibliography and Mediagraphy," a personage index, and a general index complete the set. Each volume has a comprehensive alphabetical list of entries, as well as a list of all entries by category.

Fascination with the 1960s increases, and this set will assist any research on the topic. Recommended for high-school, public, and undergraduate libraries.
