About this Item

Second British printing of Washington Irving's Sketch Book, volume 2. The first British printing of this second volume of the Sketch Book was by Murray of London in 1820. That printing of the second volume, and this one of the second volume a year later included "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and three sketches not in the first American edition. These sketches are: "Philip of Pokanoket" and "Traits of Indian Character," which Irving had originally written for the Analectic Magazine in 1814, Also included in the London printing was a short original piece, "L’Envoy," in which Irving thanked his British readers for their indulgence. This volume 2 copy, dated 1821 on the title page, appears to be in the original publisher's binding of brown textured cloth. No title on spine, which may have originally had a paper label. A square, tight and quite clean copy. Just a few age blemishes internally. Spine of binding sun lightened and with moderate wear. Covers also with some areas of wear. Marbled endpapers. Old bookplate (appears to be 19th century). Five bands on spine but they are only slightly raised bands. Size: Octavo, 310pp. Bookseller Inventory # 2934
