About this Item

Lovely, meticulously rendered vignette illustrations framing the key letter on each page, and on a few pages, two vignettes. Oblong, 9 by 13 cm. 28 pp. The album opens to a particularly nice pen and ink drawing of a schooner, framed with highly decorative foliate baroque ornamentation. The first poem is Kipling's "If", each letter device accompanied by a painting of a different type of sail boat or ship. Ship motives are used again in "Love at Sea", by Swinburne. Another Kipling poem, "The Explanation", is enlivened with paintings of colorful, expressive fish. In our judgment, these are the most charismatic of the illustrations. Other poems include Swinburne's "Rondel", "Before Sunset", "Song", and "Child's Song"; and some verses by Sappho. Other illustrative motives take in dragons, flowers and floral daipers, butterflies, and coasts. The poems are rendered in a neat, calligraphic hand, and it is very easy to imagine this manuscript as something that might have been published as a gift book. Bookseller Inventory # 004965

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
