Exquisite paintings and drawings of bucolic scenery, of caricature and of whimsy! Oblong, 9.5 by 14 cm. With 26 illustrations, all on rectos, with a few blank leaves following. Thirteen of the pieces are watercolors in large part. Our favorite artworks contained in this album are those fantastical whimsy, such as one captioned "A race to be first fiddle" which shows running violins. Less fanciful but no less charming is the watercolor of a German band in which the members all look like midgets. The scenic paintings are of a very different vein, creating as they do an almost dream-like rendering of the picturesque farm house, the Thames riverbank, a stone bridge, cows grazing, and the like. A stand-out of this group is a sunset painting, and a seascape with a sailboat before a storm. For a surfeit of charm there is a drawing of skaters on a pond with a church in the background. Then there are the caricature drawings with humorous captions. We assume the artwork is entirely original, although we can not state this with complete confidence, and with drawings of well-known sites, such as Shakespeare's birthplace, it hardly matters.
