About this Item

N.d., circa 1860s to 1900. Oblong, 14 by 19 cm. With 21 drawings and watercolors. Of these, the best are of quaint manor houses and churches, most if not all located in Derbyshire. The artist has captioned what these are on the verso, although the writing is not always clear. Among the properties are Duffield Park, Derby, for which there are two fine watercolors; a watercolor of Houghton House, Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire; a pencil rendering of S. Margaret's Bay (Nova Scotia?); a watercolor of Brookhill, Cowfold (Sussex), which is still standing and today a B&B; a pencil drawing of Pulborough Church in West Sussex; and a pencil rendering of Ivanhoe, Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire. There is also an unfinished watercolor view of Murren in Switzerland, a splendid view of a small hamlet nestled on a river that is feeding into the North Sea (presumed). In total the album comes with ten or eleven pictures which qualify as fully realized watercolors, a few other incomplete watercolors, and four or five pencil drawings that could be considered finished products. It would appear that someone has slashed out perhaps a half-dozen pictures from the album, but four of these pictures remain with the album and are otherwise undamaged. The artist is presumed to be a Miss N. Broadwood, whose name is inscribed on the FEP, and who was from Lyne, Horsham, which is in West Sussex. Lyne is most certainly referring to Lyne House, which was owned by the Broadwood family, a well-known manufacturer of Broadwood pianos, which dates to the eighteenth century and remains an ongoing concern to this day. Lucy Broadwood, possibly a sibling, was an important prononent of the English folk song, and was instrumental in the revived interest in this tradition as well as early music more generally. The album does bear the gilt initials of L.D.D., and so it is alternatively possible that the artist was someone bearing these initials. Other than the loose drawings and the discreet cuts still evident in the album, the album has been rebacked and tightened. Bookseller Inventory # 002656

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
