Book Description Georgie W. Childs, Philadelphia, 1862. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Publisher's pebbled cloth, some sunning to spine, some toning to page edges. "Known as Parson Brownlow's book."--Sabin, Bibl. amer. Original green cloth, a good example of this style of publisher's bindings. William Gannaway "Parson" Brownlow (1805-1877) was an American newspaper editor, minister, and politician. He served as Governor of Tennessee from 1865 to 1869 and as a United States Senator from Tennessee from 1869 to 1875. He rose to prominence in the 1840s as editor of the Whig, a polemical newspaper that promoted Whig Party ideals and opposed secession in the years leading up to the Civil War. Brownlow's uncompromising and radical viewpoints made him one of the most divisive figures in Tennessee political history and one of the most controversial politicians of the Reconstruction-era South. Book Description George W. Childs, Philadelphia, 1862. Original Cloth. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 458pp. + 8pp. ads. Original patterned green cloth, boards stamped in blind, spine lettering stamped in gilt. Illustrated. Frontispiece portrait of the author with offsetting of the same to the title page, owing to the lack of a tissue guard (not sure it was issued with one). Brownlow was governor of TN from 1865-1869. Because he opposed secession during the Civil War he was briefly imprisoned and later fled to the north. He is largely blamed for the rise of the KKK in TN because of his policies regarding former Confederates during Reconstruction. Lacking the front free endpaper. Corners bumped and rubbed through. Several small pull tears to the spine ends. Several pages carelessly creased at one corner. Some ink stain to the top edge of the text block, not effecting the text block itself. Light staining to the boards. Size: 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 008995
