458 pages plus ads. Brownlow, a minister, had strongly supported the Union cause in the lead-up to the Civil War. He was active in a group of East Tennesseeans who sought to stay in the Union. His pro-Union positions gained him prominence in the North, to which he fled in 1862. This memoir was extremely popular during the war, selling a reported 100,000 copies. First or early printing.
