About this Item

Copyright June 20, 1827 by Wilkins Tannehill. Early Tennessee imprint. A survey of literature, mainly of the Greeks and Romans, and of Europe during the age of Charlemagne and the High and Later Middle Ages. Includes one chapter each on the literature of the ancient Near East, the Arabic peoples, and the early Renaissance. As stated in the author's preface, it was prepared by a "backwoodsman" for the general reader "during intervals of occasional leisure from the duties of an employment little congenial with literary pursuits, and without any opportunity for consulting extensive libraries." 8vo. xiii, [1 (blank)], 15?344 pp. Shoemaker 30759; Allen, Tennessee Imprints, 30759. Library half leather and marbled paper sides, worn and rubbed over edges, joints, and corners; covers pressure-stamped and spine stamped in gilt. Occasional marginal notes. Lightly soiled, limited mostly to top margins. A few spots to preliminary pages. Library charge pocket in the back. Very good. Bookseller Inventory # 7478
