Synopsis: What does the future hold for shy people? Maybe not what we expected. Skol tells the story of shy seventeen year old Simon who has always lived on a 23rd century space freighter with his father and brother, who has never been on a planet, but receives an unexpected invitation to attend an upper class Galactic federation school on wild uninhabited Earth. Simon is a member of the Skolen, a shy avoidant people now recognized as a genetically separate race. Acutely shy, he fares poorly at the school trying to cope with his rich aristocratic peers, and in coming to terms with the sexual experience expected of him. But the school’s education includes a two month wilderness journey. Simon travels happily alone through the wild mountains, down to the haunting deserted streets of New York City and the ocean coast beyond it, unaware of a dramatic surprise waiting at the end of his journey. But the return trip proves dangerous. Hunted by forces who don’t want him to get back, his only ally a little robot toy bear he’s met along the way, he struggles to survive. The book’s vision of the future also explores the effect on all humans of the coming robotic/AI revolution, while it takes a new look at the past, with a re-interpretation of evolution that offers a different explanation for the existence of shy sensitive people in the midst of a social and increasingly de-sensitized humanity.

About the Author: Alan Conrad is also the author of the 2005 novel, The Birdcatcher, and the 2012 self-help book, The Shyness Guide.
