Grade 2-5?A collection of 33 short poems (between 2 and 12 lines) that speak of simple moments in life. Each verse is rich in feeling and emotion, providing a fertile field for the imagination. Distinguished authors include Jane Yolen, Christina Rossetti, Myra Cohn Livingston, Langston Hughes, Aileen Fisher, Sara Teasdale, Carl Sandburg, and Eve Merriam, among others. All the pieces can be found elsewhere (most sources are still in print), but collectively they acquire a new beauty. Read from start to finish, they will take readers through the seasons; from day to night; and on a journey through life itself, from birth (of a kitten), to growing up, to the aging process (of one's faithful dog). Gaber's watercolor and colored-pencil illustrations appear as little gems at the top of many of the poems and as double-page backgrounds for others. A stunning little book.?Dot Minzer, North Barrington School, Barrington, IL

Gr. 2^-4, younger for reading aloud. How short is a short poem? You could quickly count the lines or the words, but more to the point, each of these selections creates a memorable image without wasting any words. Chosen from the works of contemporary and traditional children's poets, the poems aren't formally grouped according to poet or subject, but follow one another in a natural-sounding way, linked almost invisibly by thematic threads reflecting seasonal changes. For those who like their poems illustrated (though the imagery is so vivid here that the need is questionable), watercolor-and-colored-pencil pictures accompany the verse. A good collection for children, parents, and teachers with a little time for poetry. Carolyn Phelan
