About this title

Synopsis:

Sojourner Truth dedicated her life to achieving equal rights for blacks and women. Her courage, drive, and speaking talent inspired many people. This tall, deep-voiced former slave helped plant the seeds of equal rights for all.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 3-5-- A biography with a simple text, interspersed with full-color and black-and-white archival photos on every page. Their quality ranges from clear and excellent to obviously damaged but discernible; all successfully convey the appropriate mood of courage and power in the face of poverty and helplessness. Some disturbing aspects include the textual disunity caused by full-page discussions of Frederick Douglass and the early women's movement. While relevant, the manner of the insertions is puzzling; they appear almost as fillers. Also troublesome is the author's presumption that her subject believed slavery to be honorable. While this may be intended to show the attitudes of a slave girl as opposed to those of an abolitionist, it is a difference that will be lost on the intended audience.
