Description:

N.d., circa 1891. Twelve panels, including title pages (both front and rear), with chromolithographic plates on one side, text on the other side. Each panel is 18 by 13 cm, and when the leporello is fully extended, it is 156 cm or so. The panels illustrate the life guards, the Seaforth Highlanders, the Royal Irish Lancers, the Dragoon Guards, the Royal Horse Artillery, the Royal Engineers, the coldstream guards, the Infantry, the rifle brigade, etc., all decked in ceremonial, full uniform, and the brief explanations on the back explain these units functions, uniform and some other aspect of them relating to their history or culture. The thrust of such publications as these was to glorify the military and by extension, the empire, and mold the minds of young boys into enthusiasts of both, just like toy soldiers had cast their spell on boys for time immerorial. This particular leporello is scarce, with the only copies located on OCLC contained in the libraries of Cambridge and Oxford, where the jingoism subtly imparted by such a concertina led to such dire consequences in the First World War. This copy has a few minor abrasions and more general light soiling, and some of the paper pastedown has lifted or blistered. Bookseller Inventory # 002958
