About this Item

Original wrappers. Very Good. 'Returning to the cutting-plane method, the publication of the 1954 TSP [traveling salesman problem] paper did not begin an immediate revolution in the practical solution of integer-programming problems. Within the RAND Corporation, however, the cutting-plane strategy was explored as a computational tool in the years following the Dantzig-Fulkerson-Johnson success. . . . An important contribution in this effort is documented in the paper 'On the solution of discrete programming problems' by Harry Markowitz and Alan Manne, first published as a RAND research paper in 1956. Markowitz and Manne formulate a general mixed-integer-programming model and describe, in abstract terms, how it can be solved with a variant of the cutting-plane method' (William Cook, 'Fifty-Plus Years of Combinatorial Integer Programming School of Industrial and Systems Engineering'; Georgia Institute of Technology, June 3, 2009). The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 1990 was awarded jointly to Harry M. Markowitz, Merton H. Miller and William F. Sharpe 'for their pioneering work in the theory of financial economics'. Bookseller Inventory # 20950
