About this Item

1st edition, presumably 1st printing (there is no indication in the book's printing history that there were further editions or printings); no dj as issued; from the library of the linguist Glenn Gilbert; trace of shelfwear, lower rear corner bumped, otherwise tight, unmarked, and unread, VG+; it is incredible that as a sociologist Munch could have had such a longstanding interesting in the remote South Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha and not have noticed the nature of the English spoken there and the intertwined, inbred nature of its society (Munch mentions having been there for 4 months as early as 1938), the folksong tradition is only the tip of an iceberg; I remember Munch from my early days here at SIU, a sharp man of narrow interests; this book would be of interest to collectors of books on English folksongs and the English tradition in its worldwide diaspora, as well as the narrower focus on Tristan da Cunha; multicolored covers show stylized drawings of the great peak of Tristan da Cunha and of houses and buildings there; back cover lists 10 other titles in the Indiana University Folklore Institute Monograph Serie; 10 inches high, vi + 176 numbered pages. Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
