About this Item

4to. Full green leatherette. 180pp. Near fine. A tight, pristine first edition of Volume 19 in editor Hitchcock's superb "Earlier American Music" series, being a facsimile of a volume compiled by Work's nephew, Bertram G. Work, published by J.J. Little & Ives Co. in New York circa 1884 -- full music and lyrics for 39 of Work's songs. This original edition is quite scarce, and even this facsimile reprint is seldom encountered. Work (1832-84) is best known for the Civil War song "Marching Through Georgia," although "Come Home Father!," "Kingdom Coming!" and "Grandfather's Clock" were also well known in their day. From the collection of musicologist and conductor/director Paul Clinton Echols (1944-94). Bookseller Inventory # 31800
