Illustrated by Lionel Edwards. London: Constable and Company, 1924. Quarto, cloth. 149 pages, with eight full-page color plates tipped in. Spine ends a trifle frayed. A very good copy. First Edition. George John Whyte-Melville was a British novelist born in Strathkinnes, Fife, in 1821. He graduated from Eton in 1839. In 1846 he became captain in the Coldstream Guards, retiring in 1849. His first novel, "Digby Grand," was published in 1853. When the Crimean War broke out Whyte-Melville volunteered as major for the Turkish irregular cavalry. After the Crimean War he wrote twenty-one more novels. He died while hunting December 5, 1878. Bookseller Inventory # 11397
