About this Item

[35]p. Original cloth backed boards. Related newspaper clipping from The Argus dated 1925 and leaflet about the work loosely inserted. Two pages tanned as a result of the newspaper clipping. Inscribed by the author in August 1921. The inscription reads: "To Mrs McIntyre with kind regards from the perpretator." Tucker (1859-1946) was born in England and became the inaugural Professor of Classics at Auckland University. He followed H. A. Strong as Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Melbourne in 1885 and was a trustee of the Public Library, museums and National Gallery of Victoria. Considered the 'literary oracle' of Melbourne during the 1890s he wielded considerable influence through his leaders in the Argus. His literary works were numerous although this appears to be his only published book of verse. [Source ADB Volume 12 where the contributor fails to mention this work]. Serle, p204, Miller/Macartney, p467. Bookseller Inventory # 5386
