About this title

In the mid 1980s and early '90s, Belfast was a dangerous place, particularly for residents of the Falls Road and Shankill Road neighborhoods. Joseph McGuire, a Catholic, couldn't find work. Ashamed by his inability to provide for his family, he attacked a man who refused to interview him for a job simply because of his religion. Joseph paid for that moment of uncharacteristic impulsiveness for the rest of his pained life. His older son vowed to avenge his father's humiliation, while the distractions of adolescence sheltered his younger son from the political turbulence in Northern Ireland - until tragedy struck again.

About the Author:

Tom Walsh blames his obsession with Ireland partially on a gentleman named Eoin McKiernan, now deceased, a Minnesotan he first met in a pub in Donegal Town and the founder of The Irish American Cultural Institute. "Eoin McKiernan was a once-in-a-lifetime friend. He was a true Shanachie (Irish storyteller)." Walsh graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in communications/ journalism in 1962. He and his wife, Wynne Ann, have visited Ireland, both north and south, twenty times, dating from their first trip in 1991. Walsh's first book, Damnyankee: a World War II Story of Tragedy and Survival off the West of Ireland, is available through
